In the Giver the main goal of citizens is to be similar, this is shown in rules and regulations and in social stigma.
The first time looking for differences was introduced in the Giver was when Lily had mentioned to her mother that she wanted to be a birth mother. Lily’s mother has responded by telling her that there is little honor in being a birth mother (Page 21). Another example of citizens looking for differences was when Lily pointed out the lighter color in Jonas’s eyes (Page 20). The committee of elders also point out differences by making an “general” announcements about the reminder of rules, but truly are pointing somebody out (Page 23). Is this human judgement, or is this something more?
In my opinion when there is more regards to sameness, differences are more exposed.
